In case you were wondering, prolific filmmaker Robert Rodriguez (whose most recent projects include directing episodes of) The Mandalorian and Boba Fett’s book, as well as the Netflix children’s film We Can Be Heroes) is still in the Zorro business. A few years ago he worked on a female-led Zorro-inspired show for NBC that never happened, but now it’s popping up again on the CW.

Rodriguez’s interest in Zorro’s character goes back a while; in the mid-1990s-circa Desperado/From Dusk Till Dawn/The Faculty era – he was initially attached to The Mark of Zorro starring Antonio Banderas, although the film was eventually made by director Martin Campbell. In Dec 2020 news came about a possible Zorro TV series he was working on with Sofia Vergara at NBC; it was to follow an underground artist who “fights for social justice as a contemporary version of the mythical Zorro” and comes into contact with criminals in the process.

utilities, if Deadline keeps us informedIt looks like Rodriguez can finally make his Zorro show on the CW as the network is now developing “a gender-swapped reinvention of the classic masked vigilante character.” Described as “a new version” of that NBC project (no Sofia Vergara in this one for starters), it’s about “a young Latinx woman who seeks revenge for her father’s murder, joins a secret society and takes on Zorro’s outlaw persona.”

The show is co-written by Rodriguez, Sean Tretta (Mayans MC, 12 Monkeys, Hunters) and Rebecca Rodriguez, the latter is the sister of Robert Rodriguez who is also an accomplished TV director, with credits for Doom Patrol, Snowpiecer, The Orville , and more. She’ll also be directing the Zorro show, with Tretta show running, if the CW decides to add a different kind of masked vigilante to its stable of superhero-adjacent content.
