New Moonfall trailer looks loud and stupid, but might be fun

We’re sure Roland Emmerich’s latest sci-fi disaster movie will be loud and stupid, according to the director’s oeuvre. But will it be fun? This latest moonfall trailer suggests that maybe – just maybe – could be, and if it does, it’s all because of John Bradley.

The Game of Thrones alum (he played Samwell Tarly) offers perfect comedic timing and episode in this trailer as the conspiracy theorist KC Houseman, which may mean Moonfall will be more akin to Emmerich’s last fun global disaster movie, 1996’s Independence Day, as opposed to the 2012 slogs, The Day After Tomorrow, Godzilla, Independence Day: Resurgence, et al. Not that all of Bradley’s bits are comic gold — that would be way, way too much to ask of an Emmerich movie — but it still means Moonfall is going to offer over a million scenes of CG cities being destroyed. See if you agree:

The trailer also shows how loud the movie will be with endless shots of destruction that… er… resemble many other disaster movies we’ve seen, most of them made by Emmerich. The car ride through a crumbling environment is straight out of 2012, while the weather catastrophes were featured in The Day After Tomorrow. The urban decimation was featured in both films on Independence Day. The premise is largely the same as Michael Bay’s Armageddon, while the black metal swarming aliens were definitely in one of the Transformers movies, though I absolutely refuse to look up which one it is.

Finally, this trailer also better shows how the movie will be as dumb as a box of moon rocks. So a conspiracy theorist — say not one of tens of thousands of professional astronomers — is the only person who realized the moon was falling out of orbit? Or that the space shuttle Houseman shares with rogue astronauts Jo Fowler (Halle Berry) and Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson) manages to launch through a massive tsunami when NASA aborts missions as the clouds are too big? Still, I’m fine with dumb fun and loud fun, and I’ll be thrilled if Moonfall pulls it off when it premieres on February 4.
