Here’s a Peacemaker trailer to ring in the new year

What better way to celebrate the start of 2022 than with some violence and a bald eagle? As the clock struck midnight for East Coasters, James Gunn dropped a new trailer for: peacekeeper, the spin-off of The Suicide Squad starring John Cena’s patriotic antihero. Instead of focusing on the titular characters conflicting soul, this new trailer is all about that goofy violence and goofier sense of humor that Gunn’s movie gleefully indulged in.

After Peacemaker managed to brand himself a superhero after the events of the film, Peacemaker’s sprang into action to help “save” the world again. Rather than trade barbs with Idris Elba and hang out with a shark man like last time, Peacemaker has given a new crew to play ping pong who might be just as unhinged as Task Force X. The most interesting of the cast – well yes, other than the beloved Eagley of course – is Freddie Stroma’s Vigilante. Somehow, he manages to make Peacemaker look significantly smarter. At one point in the trailer, he wields a chainsaw, which seems like a bad idea. Those two together are certainly an attractive double act of idiocy.

As with all humor, some jokes in the trailer work better than others. Danielle Brooks’ Leota Adebayo putting an extra bullet in someone who’s already finished is a good joke, as is his one-liner when he throws a rocket launcher at a horde of enemies. Others, like Vigilante being tortured, aren’t very funny at the moment, but maybe they play better in the show itself rather than as isolated bits. But even if the jokes are hit and miss, the cast seems to have enough chemistry that it wouldn’t matter too much: Cena and Brooks play really well together, and Jennifer Holland’s Emilia Harcourt seems to be too. nice as someone who’s clearly too good for the bunch of idiots she’s saddled with. And if nothing else, it’s a show in which John Cena happily leaps into the air while an eagle flies overhead. I didn’t know I needed that until I saw it.

Peacemaker will be released on HBO Max on January 13.
