5. Nightmare Alley (2021)
Nightmare Alley is Guillermo del Toro at the top of his craft. He places a unique story in the world of the carnival and populates the screen with the biggest names in the trade through his disturbed, deviant gaze. The result is a tense, dense film about greed, desire and guilt against the strangest and most fascinating backgrounds. But it’s a little too easy to pick out the big moments even if you don’t know the source material, and that’s the only thing holding it back.
