Biden Energy Department lagging behind appliance efficiency rules

Patriots, rejoice. While President Joe Biden may be trying to do things like… “Make the government a little more functional”, there is one area where its radical socialist agenda is failing: the efficiency of the apparatus.

While the Energy Department has managed to start the process of overturning a slew of rules implemented by your favorite president (Donald Trump, of course), the process has been slow and disjointed. As a result, all your favorite inefficient, money-pit dishwashers, light bulbs and more remain available for purchase. Some might argue that this is bad for the climate. But real Americans know that having the choice to waste money and fire a firehouse of carbon pollution into the atmosphere is the only viable path to eventually making America great again.

On Sunday, the Jeff Bezos Washington Post recorded the slow progress— or, excuse me, backsliding — of the Biden administration in undoing the Trump-era rules and writing new rules for devices. The Energy Department is responsible for monitoring efficiency standards. During the Trump years, it made all kinds of concessions to the natural gas industry, manufacturers and true patriots. These concessions also benefited the great man himself. Donald Trump had the light bulbs to help even his orange hue a little and a toilet that he didn’t have to flush “10 times, 15 times, as opposed to once.”

Biden’s energy department has been working on the process to change the rules for a number of devices. But his work was hampered by the deep state (which is actually good now). The Post noted that 33 devices are overdue for energy efficiency standard updates. But first, the current Energy Department will have to deal with all the roadblocks put up by its Trump predecessor.

The Post noted that while Biden instructed all executive agencies to identify Trump-era rules that block climate action and resolve them by the end of 2021, some of the 13 rules identified by the Energy Department remain unfinished. Among them are the rules for light bulbs, dishwashers and clothes washers and dryers. An American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE) analysis published last week, it was found that the light bulb rule has stalled because the Office of Management and Budget is making it run slow. That analysis also found that the Energy Department still needs to finalize updates to a broader Trump-era rule that, when complete, would unlock the ability to update 25 device standards.

All this is good news for lovers of freedom. It’s also good news for the natural gas industry’s profits, but that’s just an added benefit. However, if you’re one of those crusty climate types, failing to make appliances more efficient can make you shed some liberal tears. (Please pour them straight into my liberal mug of tears.) Improving energy efficiency is the lowest of the low hanging fruit when it comes to the liberal climate agenda. A ACEEE Report 2020 found that stricter efficiency standards could reduce carbon pollution from 1.5 to nearly 3 billion tons over the next 30 years, while saving households hundreds of dollars in energy bills.

None of this means any Biden’s first year has been a total wash; they are updated rules for water efficiency shower head as well as energy efficiency for gas stoves and boilers. But the Post noted that most efficiency changes have reinstated previous standards rather than writing new ones, a move that can save time but ultimately won’t lead to more meaningful emissions reductions. But that’s what American greatness is all about.
