There doesn’t seem to be much promotion for the next TV series to join the CWs arrowverse, Naomi. This is strange because it comes from Selma’s Ava DuVernay, and a shame because this new trailer for the show — which premieres tomorrow night — makes it look unlike any other DC superhero series on the network.
We glimpsed Naomi statues during DC’s Fandome event last October, which focused solely on her small Oregon town meeting with Superman, in which young Naomi McDuffie (Kaci Walfall) mysteriously passes out. The trailer that DuVerney tweeted today has much more than that, along with a wonderfully inspiring message:
There’s a lot of information in there, along with appearances from the show’s larger cast, including Mary-Charles Jones, Cranston Johnson, Alexander Wraith, Daniel Puig, Aidan Gemme, Will Meyers, Camila Moreno, Barry Watson, and Law & Order: SVU’s Stephanie March ao. We learn that Naomi is a megafan of Superman, complete with blog; she’s a great skateboarder; and it seems that as she and her friends investigate the mystery behind Naomi’s strange reaction to Superman, they’ll discover that Naomi’s parentage is much more than just adoption (something Wraith’s character Dee seems to know a lot about).
If you’ve come this far without knowing Naomi’s secret, I see no reason to give it away; Suffice it to say, her origin story so far seems very consistent with the DC hero origins as created by writers Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker in her self-titled debut comic from 2019. But what strikes me most about TV series, is how cinematic Naomi looks. I suppose it shouldn’t come as a surprise, considering DuVernay runs the show, but it looks so much better than any other Arrowverse series, past and present, it’s almost mind-boggling to imagine the Flash or Batwoman coming along – not that they will, at least in season one, as DuVernay confirmed last week. (So Superman & LoisTyler Hoechlin won’t come over to say hello after he saves the city.)
Naomi premieres on the CW tomorrow night and will be available on the CW app on Wednesday.
