3 short science fiction and horror films: Creature Terrors, Robot Fun

‘This is the season to binge watch’ all the movies you missed in 2021, as well as all prices hopeful crowded streamers and theaters this time of year. But if you only have a few minutes to spare, we’ve got a trio of sci-fi and horror movies that are perfect for a bite-sized entertainment.

1) Significant other

Divided by Short of the weekQuinn George’s Significant Other introduces us to a couple in the middle of the night who are about to find themselves in the middle of a battle over a phenomenon that is either a trick of the light or something far more evil. It’s short, haunting, makes good use of a setting that is basically a single hallway, and doesn’t feel the need to explain itself too much. It makes you feel very restless.

2) Critical Component

By Dust Derek Frederickson’s animated short Critical Component comes about a robot with small eyes and spindly limbs who takes his first steps in the world, only to discover he has a faulty part. What must a curious and determined little man do to put himself in order? Make a few mistakes, maybe stumble a little – and then with a little help find its true purpose.

3) They came from below

When “they” pop up in a horror movie title, you know to be on the lookout for who or whatever that could be referring to. Dylan Doornbos Hayes’ short stars It and Lock & Key‘s Jackson Robert Scott as a kid who begs to stay home while his sister rushes to the store, but soon has serious reservations about being left alone in the dark. They Came From Below is legitimately exciting (Scott definitely cornered the market with “precocious younger brothers dealing with monstrous situations”), and the final shot leaves you wondering what happened next without feeling like an exploiter.
